Coffee:
McDonald's on the way out of Pittsburgh. (Hey. Don't judge me. It had to be done. I can't always be runnin' around looking for a quaint, atmospheric coffee shop. Sometimes quick and cheap at the McCafe drive-thru is just what I want. I'm American.)

From the journal:
I bid Jared adieu, and Jer and I hit the road for Washington, DC. It was, as always, good to see Jared. And it was, as always, good to get back on the road.

The drive was beautiful! So many rolling hills and quaint farmsteads. I wish I had taken more road shots on this trip to capture our "everyday" life. Then again, it's impossible to capture that moment when the sun shining on a field of corn lights the stalks and deepens the shadows between the rows, and the field ripples past your window like a herd of zebras running across the plains. And the wind blows your hair back, and you smell earth, and dew, and you hear nothing but the sound of you and a friend rushing into a new day and a new adventure.

We got into DC at about 4:30 and enjoyed an evening with Jeremy's friend Christie. She is an avid cyclist and a real sweetheart. She provided a wonderful snack of zucchini and hummus before dinner and later in the evening whipped up a batch of crepes to enjoy with a jar of strawberry-rhubarb jam Jeremy's friend Kallie had sent along.

We ate at a new restaurant near her apartment: The Shake Shack. I had a Shackburger, and it was quite delicious.

We ended up crashing with strangers--now friends--once again. Kim and Elica are friends of Josh, who is married to Jeremy's good friend, Kallie. Their couch and futon were unbelievably comfy. And Kim and Elica themselves were kind, smart, witty, well-traveled, and super hospitable. A giant thank you to them for housing us wayfaring strangers!!

Me, Christie and Jer after a lovely evening in DC.

(Unfortunately, I was slow on the trigger today and didn't get any photos of the Shake Shack, or our kind hosts, or people dressed up as French maids to celebrate Bastille Day...)
